It does not seem right that our church building should stand empty – especially on Easter Sunday. But now our world has a chance to stop and ponder what is most important. We have discovered that many things we thought were urgently important can wait. Now we have time for family and for faith.
The timing seems providential. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday are designed to bring us all the blessings Jesus has purchased and won for us with His holy precious blood and His innocent sufferings and death.
Yes, it is a time of social distance, but it is also a time of new and renewed connections via the internet and social media and even the good old- fashioned telephone.
We are eager for the day when we can get back to normal and worship together in church again. When we do, we will appreciate it even more.

Two Ways to Access Pastor Albrecht’s Bible Classes
These instructions work for Sunday morning Bible class and for Tuesday morning Bible class and for Saturday morning Bible class. Lord willing, these numbers should not change from week to week.
Some of you have already joined a Bible class by following these instructions:
- Call 612-509-1531
- When you are asked for the conference you wish to join, dial 99#.
- When you are asked for the password, dial 14215#.
- We have discovered that there is a limit of ten callers per session.
A second way to join the discussion is to follow these instructions:
- Call 929-277-6489
- When you are asked for the PIN, dial 401-952-400#
As you can see, this number is long distance. On most cell phones it will not cost you extra to dial this number. But if you have to pay extra for long distance calls, please call the 612 number listed above.
If you can dial the 929 area code without having to pay extra charges, please use the 929 number and leave the 612 number for those who need it.
Bible Study Methods led by Pastor Volker
Do you find yourself with extra time lately? Are you tired of watching TV? Do you want to study or meditate on Bible passages, but don’t have a method you’re happy with at the moment? Is there a part of the Bible you would like to dig deeper into on you own, but aren’t sure of an organized way to do it?
On Monday, April 13, Pastor Volker will launch a Facebook Live presentation about Bible study methods based on a book by Rick Warren. Each session will explain the method, demonstrate it and provide you with a resource for you to try it yourself. Upon trying it, you may send Pastor Volker questions and thoughts through Facebook and he will address them on the next Facebook Live presentation the following Monday.
I will post a live session on the Saint James Facebook page every Monday until the social distancing is over. The first session will be about the Devotional Method. Future methods will include: Chapter Survey, Bible Character Study, Book Survey and a few others. The purpose is to give helpful ideas to anyone who wants guidance for starting and enriching your personal Bible study and devotion.
I hope to be seen on Monday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
Peace be with you.
New Baptismal Font Arrives on Good Friday
Working from a design created by Father James Notebaart, in collaboration with the Saint James Sanctuary Interior Committee and pastoral staff, church furnishing artisans at St. Paul Fabricating have built a new portable font for use in the front of our church.
The design of the font is rich in baptismal symbolism and also reflects the design of our original font with an octagonal shape and shell and water motif.
The number eight reminds us that after resting on the seventh day of creation week, Adam and Eve’s new life in the garden of Eden began on the eighth day. We are also reminded that eight people were saved in Noah’s ark.
The golden shells reflect the round seal of Saint James on our sanctuary wall with its three shells.
The running water motif reminds us of Jesus’ promise to give living water to the Samaritan woman at the well.
The vine motif at the bottom is in the pattern of a laural wreath, a sign of victory over death (Rev. 2:10).
Materials used in the new font resemble the communion rail, highlighting the connection between Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
The font base has hidden, locking casters for ease of movement when it needs to be moved, and safety while in place and in use.
The font is a memorial gift in honor of Paul Helland, given by Judy Helland and her family. We originally hoped to dedicate it during our Easter services. We will wait until we are able to resume corporate worship in our sanctuary.
